In this lesson you will learn how to make a double wedding ring block. There are two main ways to make the same look with this block - one with curved pieces and a large center section and one with individual blocks. You will see how to do both in this lesson as well as get tips for cutting the curved pieces, assembling them in the correct order and pressing the blocks.

In this lesson you will learn how to create the look of curved piecing using an applique method, rather than having to cut and sew curved pieces. A wheel block is used as an example block for this session, and while making it you will learn how to trace the templates onto fusible web, apply them to the wrong side of fabric and then assemble the pieces onto a background and fuse in place.

Description

Curved piecing isn’t as complicated as it might seem, and after this course you will be able to confidently tackle any kind of curved block as well as bind the curved edge of a quilt. In this class, you will learn about some of the different supplies and tools needed to cut out and make curved blocks. Some of these items include templates and different sizes of rotary cutters. You will also get several tips on what size of rotary blade to use, depending on the block being cut out, as well as tips on where to place straight rulers if they can be used when cutting out template pieces. There are several different sample blocks that you will learn how to make in this course, including melon blocks, drunkard’s path blocks, double wedding ring blocks and wheel blocks. For each block you will learn a different curved piecing technique or tip, including how to know which piece to put on top when aligning fabric edges, how to pin pieces together and how to stitch and press. You will also get template pieces for all these blocks in order to practice. Once you learn how to make several different curved blocks, you will learn how to bind a curved edge. Learning this includes understanding the difference between straight grain tape and bias tape. You will learn how to cut and assemble individual bias strip pieces for the binding as well as how to make on long strip of continuous bias binding. Finally, you will learn how to bind the curved edge of a quilt where two curves come together, like on the edge of a double wedding ring quilt.

Ashley has sewn for years. Her mother taught her at a very young age. When first starting out, she stuck to mastering commercial patterns before venturing into creating her own. Her patterns have been featured in Sew News, Sew It All, and she has even been on Sew It All TV. Quilting is somewhat new to Ashley, but she dove in head first – coming up with an original design for her first quilt that included curved seams and hand appliqué! She was even lucky enough to have it featured in one of Quilty’s “This is My Quilt” episodes. Ashley loves all things crafty, from sewing to knitting, crochet to quilting, and everything in between. When she isn’t working on a new project or learning a different technique she loves teaching her passion to others.
