Description

Applique is a fun way to add extra design and texture to your next quilting project. The type of applique you choose to use can depend on how you want to attach the applique shape, what stitch you want to use and whether you want it to have a finished edge. Raw edge applique using fusible web is a great way to learn applique, as fusing the shapes in place first can make them easier to stitch and the edges do not have to be finished. Turned edge applique can be done using either machine or hand stitching and can give a project a more finished or professional look. Reverse applique can also be done using either machine or hand stitching, depending on whether you want a raw or finished edge. Reverse applique differs from other applique methods in that the main fabric is actually placed under a background fabric as opposed to on top of it. Shadow applique is yet another method of applique and requires an additional layer of sheer fabric on top to create a more muted look.

Ashley has sewn for years. Her mother taught her at a very young age. When first starting out, she stuck to mastering commercial patterns before venturing into creating her own. Her patterns have been featured in Sew News, Sew It All, and she has even been on Sew It All TV. Quilting is somewhat new to Ashley, but she dove in head first – coming up with an original design for her first quilt that included curved seams and hand appliqué! She was even lucky enough to have it featured in one of Quilty’s “This is My Quilt” episodes. Ashley loves all things crafty, from sewing to knitting, crochet to quilting, and everything in between. When she isn’t working on a new project or learning a different technique she loves teaching her passion to others.
